Animal Profiling International (API) announces launch of Neospora diagnostic service for use in the Cattle Industry cattle
PORTLAND, Oregon – Animal Profiling International (API), a company dedicated to the improvement of animal health management and food safety through the application of technology solutions, has formally announced the launch of a new diagnostic procedure designed to detect the Neospora parasite in dairy cows.
Neospora caninum, first identified in 1988, is a protozoal parasite that is thought to be a leading cause of abortion and neonatal morbidity in beef and dairy cattle. Exposure in U.S. dairy herds is thought to be in the range of 16%-36% of cows testing positive on blood samples. With no known drug to clear a cow of infection, parasite control is based on culling positive animals, preventing entry of infected replacements into the herd, and preventing likely routes of horizontal infection. Since clinical signs of illness due to Neospora are undetectable, testing for the parasite is the only means of identification.
Use of diagnostic testing allows cattle owners and operators to assess infection information or exposure status. Testing also provides information on risks and circumstances that could affect cattle health and performance and is in keeping with API’s aim of providing “management over medicine” technologies to the cattle industry. “Adding the Neospora Diagnostic to our product line allows us to identify another disease responsible for losses in the dairy and beef industry. Further, our ability to test for BVD, Johne’s, BLV, pregnancy and now Neospora using one sample improves our customer’s efficiencies, which is especially important with the current economic conditions facing dairies,” said Bruce Hoffman DVM, API President.
API’s industry experts provide the products and services that operators in the beef, dairy and food supply industries need to make their jobs more efficient and profitable. The company has tested over 2.5 million head of cattle and dairy animals for BVD and currently services clients in over 40 U.S. states. In addition to Neospora and BVD testing, the company also provides diagnostic services for the detection of Bovine Leukosis Virus (BLV), Johne’s disease, pregnancy and mastitis in cattle and PRRS in swine.
